This Romantic Beach Wedding Will Make You Want To Visit Crete

Of course, we’ve all daydreamed over cave houses with blue roofs, private plunge pools looking over the Aegean. But, Greece is so much more than that, have you ever considered Crete?

I’m a romantic soul who got engaged in the Cyclades. I said ‘Yes!’ on Milos and then we celebrated on Santorini. So, I understand the pull to get married & honeymoon in the more well-known Greek islands. That being said, having spent five weeks of our honeymoon on Crete, the largest of Greece’s many beautiful islands, I can tell you that the Cretan beaches & rugged landscapes have so much to offer.

Take this romantic real wedding, for example. Twenty-two guests assemble on a secluded private beach – something quite difficult to find on busy Santorini. The scenery is wild & fecund. With warm tones, the guests & groom dressed in light colors, herds of sheep crossing empty winding roads, olive branches sweeping across the dinner table…this is authentic Cretan bliss.

For those searching for a wilder Greek experience, with plenty of room to find your own private vineyard or villa, Crete beckons. And don’t worry, if you get married in Crete, Chantal and Bernd’s Santorini honeymoon is just a quick hop away.

Our Love Story

We already knew each other through chance encounters, getting to know the right thing began during our school days.

After a short time, we started dating. The initial phase came from Channy. After several meetings, there was the first kiss and Channy then wanted to enter into a committed relationship. After a little thought…it got serious. We have been inseparable since February 4th, 2012.

After a long-distance relationship of three years, we moved into our first apartment together. We discovered travel for ourselves. After a while, we grew more and more into one unit. So, Bernd didn’t hesitate and asked the big question at sunset on the beach in Crete last autumn in 2020.

The Photography & Videography

Since Channy takes photos herself, we knew exactly what we value. It was important to us to capture this special day as a story in pictures so that we can experience the day again afterward. In our search, we came across the perfect photographer duo, Manos and Georgia. We liked that they capture the perfect moment as it really is. We didn’t want any posed photos but a report from the day. The attention to detail was the culmination of our decision. We wanted a smooth and uncomplicated process. In the preliminary discussion, it quickly became clear that the chemistry was right. On the day Manos and Georgia were unobtrusive and inconspicuous as if they had been guests but supported us when it was necessary. Manos and Georgia’s photos are individuals so each one bears the signature of the Baraut couple. Thanks to Manos and Georgia we couldn’t have imagined a better photographer duo.

What could be nicer than being able to relive your special day in all its facets? That’s where Christos came in. Christos blew us straight away with his videos. His videos are modern and unique. We wanted an emotional and detailed video. Christos understands his craft and reflects the individual character of the bride and groom in his videos. Thanks to our video, we were able to see scenes that we couldn’t see on the day of the wedding due to the excitement. Our expectations were exceeded.

The Venues

For the ceremony, we had a beautiful stretch of beach with sand underfoot and pine trees that combined all of our wishes. We chose the motto ‘all in white’ and our 22 guests harmonized perfectly in this setting.

After the ceremony and the champagne reception, the transfer took our guests to the venue for dinner and the party and we enjoyed our wedding shoot on the beach with photographer Manos and Georgia and videographer Christos Tzanidakis and his partner.

We’re so happy of how beautiful the venue was. I think all our guests were blown away when they arrived. The traditional stone house is located in the middle of the mountains with goats and sheep as the only neighbors. You have a view of the mountains and Mediterranean trees all around you. It had all of the Cretan vibes we were going for. With both the ceremony at the beach with the sea in the background and dinner with mountains views, it was the perfect mixture for us.

Favorite Moments

The most memorable part of the day was our ceremony. We let our emotions run free and every second was just an intense feeling. Saying our vows to one another in such a special vibe in front of all your favorite people is pretty special. Our singer and the saxophonist provided goosebumps during the ceremony. We were laughing, we were crying—it was just perfect.

Our ritual with colors on a canvas now hangs in our living room and reminds us of these beautiful moments.

The Getaway Car & Fireworks

But not to be forgotten are the gifts from our guests, which were unforgettable highlights: A white, convertible oldtimer drove Channy to the ceremony. After the shoot, the convertible brought us to our location. We will never forget the journey through the mountains. And as if that weren’t enough, the fireworks in the night were made for a dream.

The Decor

For the decoration, we wanted natural Cretan beauty with olive branches to be the main event, with minimal parts of eucalyptus and colored flowers as highlights. The decoration was incorporated at the ceremonial arch and small bouquets ornated the traditional wood-chairs to cohesively the ceremony. The table for dinner took up the decoration, added with lanterns, under the chain of lights it created exactly the setting we had imagined.
Our retro bar in turquoise provided an extraordinary highlight and splash of color.

Advice to Other Couples

Plan your wedding day as you imagine your dream day and not as others imagine it or how it is expected. When making difficult decisions, listen to your gut instinct.

On the wedding day itself, enjoy every second and let yourself go. On this day you only feel happiness. If something goes wrong or does not turn out the way that you planned, don’t worry about the small things.

The Honeymoon

For our honeymoon, we chose Santorini and Mykonos. Santorini is truly a unique island that doesn’t exist anywhere else. We have heard of the breathtaking sunset on Santorini many times and it lives up to its reputation. Mykonos has its very own vibe. It offered everything we wanted for the honeymoon.
