Where Do Moissanites Come From?

Okay, for all my starry-eyed brides (& grooms) out there, you're going to love this cosmic origin story. The true, original Moissanite stones come from the stars.

Fifty thousand years ago a meteorite crashed into the Earth deep in the desert of Arizona, now known as Diablo Crater. Pieces of the meteorite spread across the Southwest leaving sparkling bits of stone scattered throughout the arid desert. In 1893, when studying the remains of this astronomical event, Henri Moissan discovered the glittering gems, which are now named in his honor.

The sparkling stone dazzled the world and became the perfect jewel for any mystical dreamer.

Understandably so, Moissanite derived from outer-space are exceedingly valuable and scarcely on the market. For that reason, Moissanites sold as jewelry today are lab-grown jewels. Scientists recreate the identical mineral makeup of the original stones to cultivate these gems, making them inexpensive and a brilliant exact replica.

How Much Do Moissanite Engagement Rings Cost?

You've probably noticed Moissanite engagement rings cost less? There's a good reason for that! Because the Moissanites on the market today are all lab-grown they lack the usual cost of mining, shipping & rarity of traditional mined Diamonds. Thus, these gems cost far less per carat than traditional Diamond engagement rings, yet are no less beautiful! This means more bang for your buck. Bigger sparkle, smaller price tag.

However, that doesn’t mean you should expect all designs to be automatically “cheap”. You’ll have to factor in the quality of design, whether you’re working on a custom piece, the metal used in the band & any accompanying stones in your design.

Moissanites vs Diamonds

Soon-to-be engaged shoppers generally compare Moissanites to Diamonds due to their similarity in look & style. For two sparkling, clear gemstones, it's only natural! We'll lay out the comparisons below…

Value: As we covered above, when comparing the stones alone, Moissanites are significantly cheaper by carat, often costing 85% less than mined Diamonds. That means if you're on a set budget, you can afford a much larger, statement-making Moissanite.

Ethics: Moissanites are conflict-free. Being lab-grown, the gems lack the humanitarian & environmental concerns of mined Diamonds (and any other mined stone, in fact!) You can also cut your environmental impact by purchasing a Moissanite that's created & designed locally in your home country.

Beauty: We think both stones are equally beautiful! (And we consider ourselves quite the wedding tastemakers). You won't lose out on taste or style by proposing with a Moissanite versus a Diamond. And if you want to get nerdy, Moissanites actually score higher than Diamonds on the refractive scale, giving them more brilliance & sparkle than Diamonds!
