For a long time Pinterest was the social media platform of choice for the wedding world.

And while we're still obsessed with it for DIY tutorials, decor ideas, and wedding dress spotting, Instagram is fast becoming our favourite photo resource for finding local vendors, swooning over engagement rings, and getting lots of beauty inspiration.

A few weeks ago, we shared a rundown of a few of our favourite Instagrammers to follow for hair tutorials, but when it came to Melbourne hairstylist, Vanessa Barney (aka @brides_by_vanessa_jane), we figured her work deserved a post all of its own!

Vanessa caught our eye on Instagram a few weeks back, with her #50in50 project.

Over 50 days she shared the most gorgeous bridal hairstyles, and instantly we were hooked on her beautiful braids, elegant updos, and pretty half-up-half-down styles.

Teaming up with photographer, Eleanor Landford, stylist, Chelsea Nieper, and model, Lidija (who's giving us major hair envy BTW) along with a host of cool Australian designers, Vanessa created a feed that's crammed with hair ideas for brides, bridesmaids and wedding guests, whatever their style.

So, as always when we discover something gorgeous, we just couldn't keep it to ourselves! We got in touch with Vanessa and asked her to tell us more about the idea behind #50in50.

Scroll down to check out (and bookmark/pin/copy) her favourite styles, but first, let's get some expert insights and pro tips on nailing your own gorgeous wedding day tresses from (the super talented!) Vanessa…

From the HairStylist

I came up with the #50in50 concept late last year. I wanted a way to showcase my work while creating a little excitement. I thought a new style everyday for 50 days would do that.

I did a lot of research looking for hairstyles that I liked and created a mood board. The styles really just evolved on the day, with the feel of the dresses, accessories and Lidia's amazing hair. Number 1 is the crowd fave.

I feel soft undone hair and waves are the biggest trend at the moment. The majority of my clients will say ‘I don't want my hair tight off my face I want softness, nothing too severe.' My brides and bridesmaids like to see the wispy texture in their hair, as it keeps it soft.

When looking for hair styles try to look at photos that are the same colour as your hair. Blonde hair is always going to show up texture more while, dark hair will always look more glossy and shiny.

If just have dark hair and you want to see more texture consider having some lighter highlights scattered through your hair. Alternatively clip in hair extensions with highlights can used to add lightness.
