Modern Frida Kahlo Inspired Wedding Ideas

We do, on occasion, find ourselves oohing and ahhing over Frida Kahlo-inspired weddings on Pinterest and the blog alike. And while sometimes, these editorials can come across a bit literal, today’s Oregonian styled shoot is an ode not just to Frida, but rather her masterpiece artwork.

Vibrant in color, Frida’s paintings were the catalyst for this Latin-inspired wedding editorial photographed by Devyn Spangler and styled by Peachy Keen Coordination. Based in the moody forests of the Pacific Northwest, we can understand why the team is dreaming in Southwestern technicolor. (Especially as a Seattlite who just married in Mexico myself!)

Among the colorful details, we’re dying for a few things: for one, the subtle Latin skull depicted via florals on the beautiful wedding cake – not a morbid idea in this sense, but rather a celebration of those in the afterlife. Another fabulous floral find is the bold asymmetrical flower crown filled with marigolds (a bloom practically essential for Mexican-styled events!)

A special shout-out must go to Brides for a Cause. Providing the beautiful gown in this inspiration, Brides for a Cause (located in Portland, Seattle & my hometown of Tacoma!) acts both as a fabulous place to find beautiful gowns at a lower price & a charitable organization donating to important local causes.

From Peachy Keen Coordination

Devyn our talented photographer initially came up with this concept by bring inspired by Frida –she fell in love with her paintings and colors which was woven into this collaboration. Other vendors were also really moved by the stunning weddings that we see from afar in Arizona with beautiful Latino vibes of bright color, playful florals, and a nod to deserts. Wedding day is one of the absolute best days ever and our fun couple really embraced the excitement, intimacy, and elegance!

Our florals incorporated some traditional Latino heritage tradition with many foraged marigolds that were both dried and fresh, a nod to the bright paintings featuring Frida and life of vibrancy. Since this was a May celebration, we did want to incorporate some of our Oregon into the florals with large, fluffy peonies.

The Cake

If you look super closely, you will see a skull created out of floral ON the actual wedding cake. We wanted to have a bit of ’til death due us part’ with an observation that death is truly never the end, but the afterlife is something to celebrate together.

The Attire & Accessories

We opted to keep our groom in simple black attire and our bride in a traditional a-line dress with lots of layers. She looked like a cloud floating as she walked and the florals with her bright lips serving as a huge pop of color. The floral headpiece was intentionally created to have a bit of movement and asymmetrical flair.

The Stationery

Our stationery included a foldable wedding invitation with paper lace in navy with lots of pink accessories to contrast (but also tie in the terracotta. We incorporated a bit of marigold details to pair with the other accessories such as the ribbon on the bouquet.

The Tablescape

Our tablescape was approached to be intentionally minimalist with a sophisticated flair. Desiring to bring in elegance but also texture, we featured a variety of desert plants and clay terracotta pots down the table with gold candlesticks with a bare textured wood table.
